Merkel Cell Polyomavirus Strains in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma

We investigated whether Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients in France carry Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and then identified strain variations. All frozen MCC specimens and 45% of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens, but none of the non-MCC neuroendocrine carcinomas specimens, had MCPyV. Strains from France and the United States were similar.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma Analysis of Outcomes: A 30-Year Experience

BACKGROUND Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive cutaneous malignancy with poor prognosis. Limited data exists to guide treatment decisions. Here we report on our institutional experience and outcomes treating patients with MCC. METHODS A database search (1984-2014) of patients treated at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics was used to identify patients with histologically...

merkel cell polyomavirus infection in a patient with merkel cell carcinoma: a case report

conclusions the findings of this study are consistent with the hypothesis that local, systemic, or tumor-induced immunosuppression may allow the mcpyv to initiate skin aggressive cancer. it is necessary to maintain regular check over patients taking immunosuppressive medications for mcpyv infection. since there is not any information about detection and molecular biology analysis of mcpyv among...

Merkel Cell Carcinoma in Immunosuppressed Patients

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive cutaneous malignancy. The infectivity of Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), an apparent agent in MCC development, may be exacerbated with impaired immune responses. This paper reviews relevant data regarding the role of immunosuppression in the development of MCC and describes modes of immunodeficient states. Because of the inherently low inci...

Imaging in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin with a mortality rate of approximately 25% (Peloschek et al., 2010). Accurate assessment of nodal involvement in patients with MCC predicts significantly overall outcome (Smith et al., 2012 and Ortin-Perez et al., 2007). Due to the rarity of this highly aggressive disease, only a few imaging reports on MCC were p...
